Saal Digital REVIEW

Picture
As I was scrolling through facebook last month I came across a post that was offering both amateur & professional photographers a $150 (USD) voucher, including delivery, for a Saal Professional Line Photo Book in exchange for an honest review.  You just had to have a link to your photographs on some sort of public forum, facebook, instagram, a website etc so your work could be verified.  Anyway, I filled in the details not sure if it would eventuate to anything, but later that day I received a voucher.

[ Please note the photos from my phone & the lighting don't actual do the book justice but I haven't had time to pull out my big camera take some decent shots. ]

So here is my review:

I received my book a few weeks ago (life has been busy) & it’s absolutely beautiful.  The quality is fantastic & the images pop off the page, I do love a good gloss image.

The software was easy to use but not quite as intuitive as others I’ve had experience with, but that could also be a familiarity thing.  In hindsight I would have spent more time going through the features & working with their masks.  There is one photo in my book that needed softening but completely my fault for not taking the time.

I added $10 (USD) to my order & ended up with a 48 page, 12” x 8” Professional Line Photobook that has an Acrylic front & black leather cover back & spine.

The Cover is about 5mm thick acrylic, I used one of my favourite photos taken in Malaysia of some teal wood work at an Indian temple, I’m not sure why I love the image, I just do.  I’d read reviews that said not to use the inside of the front cover for a photo & I wasn’t sure if there would be a paper page in between like other photo books I’ve had experience with.   So I just put my name & logo on the inside cover.

With this type of Saal Digital Photo Book there is no paper page you just open it up to glossy photo paper (or paper of your choice.  I personally think that the inside cover & front page could quite easily accommodate a 2 page spread & look fantastic. Although there is about 5mm from the paper to the edge of the cover, I'd just want to ensure that the back of the front cover could be black (or the same colour as your chosen cover.

I prefer full page photos so didn’t use any of the Saal layouts & pre edited my photos before importing them.  I find narrowing down which photos to include is always the hardest part of creating a photo book.  Even more so for this one as it’s the first one I’ve created in over a decade solely of photos I’ve taken that I absolutely love, and they span over a 15year time frame.

Delivery was super quick & shipping was very reasonably priced (even though included with the voucher).

I’ll happily use Saal again for keepsake projects but the price point isn’t quite there for the yearly lot of family type photo books I make for personal use.
